There was a guy who tested this on YouTube.

He lost a pair of designer sunglasses and was telling his wife at home that he thought the car garage had stolen them whilst servicing his car.
The next day he clicked online and was shocked to see ads for the very same glasses he had lost. so he decided to test his theory of eavesdropping.
He closed all his apps on the phone, as did his wife, so they were not "open"
He and his wife do not have a cat, but they spent the day discussing catfood, not on the phone or via mail, just while they were at home and out in the street and in their car.
The next day, both him and his wife were receiving ads for cat food and cat products via their phones and laptops online.
It is definitely an eye opener

Reminds me of the film ‘Emeny of the State’ with Will Smith. There we’re surveillance and bugging systems galore and that was back in the mid 90s!

I haven't had any kind of mobile phone for the last three years or so. I manage perfectly well with a landline. Of course if they find a way to spy on people through chocolate then I would be screwed. That I am addicted to.

Conspiracy theory confirmed: researcher shows how phone shows ads based on conversations it hears -

While social media companies have spent years denying that their apps are recording your private conversations, the truth is finally coming out....
