India’s ‘Covid outbreak’ & the need for scientific integrity – not sensationalism
Western media outlets are currently paying a great deal of attention to India and the apparent impact of COVID-19. The narrative is that the coronavirus is ripping through the country – people are dying, cases are spiralling out of control and hospitals are unable to cope.
There does indeed seem to be a major problem in parts of the country. However, we need to differentiate between the effects of COVID-19 and the impacts of other factors. We must also be very wary of sensationalist media reporting which misrepresents the situation.
For instance, in late April, the New York Post ran a story about the COVID ‘surge’ in India with the headline saying, “footage shows people dead in the streets”. Next to it was an image of a woman lying dead. But the image was actually of a woman lying on the floor from a May 2020 story about a gas leak in Andhra Pradesh.
To try to shed some light on the situation and move beyond panic and media sensationalism, I recently spoke with Yohan Tengra, a political analyst and healthcare specialist based in Mumbai.
Tengra has carried out a good deal of research into COVID-19 and the global response to it. He is the co-author of a new report: ‘How the Unscientific Interpretation of RT-PCR & Rapid Antigen Test Results is Causing Misleading Spikes in Cases & Deaths’.
For India, he says:

Covid-19 is unlikely ever to be eradicated and the outlook for the pandemic remains “pretty bleak” in the medium term, leading Government scientists have said.
England’s chief medical officer Professor Chris Whitty said the world will continue to see a “significant” number of deaths unless more effort is made to vaccinate the vulnerable globally.
And he warned that while coronavirus may become a “much milder, chronic disease” in the long term, new variants will continue to cause problems.
Speaking at a Royal Society online event about Covid-19 on Thursday, Prof Whitty said: “In the medium term, the outlook still looks pretty bleak around the world.
“I would really reiterate that until we have got a situation where we have induced immunity in those who are most vulnerable everywhere in the world, we will continue to see really significant morbidity and mortality from this virus.”
Prof Whitty said that while time and science “was on our side”, the virus was not “going to go away”.
He added: “In the long term I do expect that this will become a much milder, chronic disease overall, probably with seasonal peaks, and from time to time there will be enough of an antigenic shift that actually we have another problem to which we have to respond in due course.”
Professor Wendy Barclay, who is advising the Government’s Covid-19 response, said there was “a lot to do” in the medium term in order to bring the pandemic under control.
She said: “We will not eradicate this virus.

Government, Doctors Warn Brits Against Hugging Even After Restrictions Lifted
The government and medical experts are urging Brits to be cautious when hugging other people even after lockdown measures are eased next week.
From May 17th, Brits will be ‘permitted’ by the government to meet with a total of 6 people indoors. However, despite people being legally allowed to congregate inside for the first time in nearly 6 months, rules on close contact and hugging have remained largely undefined.
Leaks from within government this morning indicate that Brits will be urged to restrict themselves to “cautious cuddling,” reflecting concerns “that the public could go too far.”

It’s a sad day in the history of the United Kingdom. Millions of people are jumping for joy as they have been granted permission by the Government of the day to hug a loved one again. If you really haven’t hugged a loved one over the past year because the Government told you not to then we really do pity you. However Good Morning Britain’s resident GP Dr Hilary Jones is not happy. He has warned people that “hugging will pose a serious risk of spreading coronavirus”.
Dr Hilary said that with coronavirus still spreading and with new variants detected, it could be a “mistake” to start allowing such close contact.
“If you are in hugging range and you’re touching somebody, and your face is right next to their’s, you are gonna be breathing the breath that they are exhaling. “The virus is transmitted through aerosol droplets, so the risk is much higher.
“Professor Noakes, she’s part of SAGE, she’s saying that actually she’s worried, and that hugs should be selective.” “They should be short, they should be selective… hug your children, hug your grandchildren, not promiscuous hugs we’re not talking about here, not hugging everybody, not getting too close for too long.
“Right now it might be a mistake, because we have got these new variants, we’ve still got 2,000 cases that we know about every day, probably a lot more that we’re not testing for, so it is still time to be cautious.”

A leading coronavirus adviser has warned that the government needs to “act hard and act fast” if the Indian variant turns out to evade vaccines.
Prof Stephen Reicher, who advises the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (Sage), said that if this is the case, Boris Johnson must not “dither and delay as in the past”.
Referring to the dire infection numbers in India, which caused a record 4,205 confirmed deaths on Wednesday, he added: “Unless we want to turn into another India.”
There are three variants in the UK that have been identified in India, but scientists are most concerned about B.1.617.2.
According to the last Public Health England update on variants from Thursday, detected cases of B.1.617.2 more than doubled to 520 last week.
There is currently no solid data about the impact the variant may have on vaccines, though England’s chief medical officer Prof Chris Whitty said on Monday: “At this point in time our view is it is less likely to be able to escape vaccination than some of the other variants, particularly the South African one.”
