Children have been ‘left behind’ in the Covid-19 vaccination programme, a member of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation has said today.
Professor Adam Finn, from the University of Bristol, said the focus for trials has remained on adults due to children not being seriously affected by the virus. But he said he wants to ‘get on’ and do the necessary trials in under 16s so they can also receive the inoculation.
More than 45million vaccinations have been given in the UK to date, with 33.3million having received a first dose and more than 11million people now fully vaccinated. So far, those aged over 45 have been invited to get the jab in England, where around 80 per cent of the over-75s have now received both doses.
Children are at low-risk of falling ill from Covid-19, but they do still play a role in transmitting the virus to those who could fall seriously ill. Earlier this month, a trial of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine on children was paused while concerns around several unusual blood clots are investigated.
The scientists involved said there were no safety concerns with the trial itself and they were waiting for further information from the MHRA.

12 Year-Olds to Be Given Covid Vaccines from September
Children as young as 12 will be given Covid vaccines when they return to school after summer, according to leaked “core planning” documents. Even younger children could be vaccinated shortly afterwards, with Oxford University’s ongoing child vaccine study testing the AstraZeneca jab on 300 children aged six to 17. The Government reportedly wants to vaccinate the young to help the nation avoid a third wave of Covid infections. MailOnline has the story.

The German health minister has said that the country intends to start vaccinating children over the age of 12 during the summer holidays if the Pfizer vaccine gets the thumbs-up to be administered to adolescents.
Speaking on Thursday, German Health Minister Jens Spahn promised vaccinations for children over the age of 12 during the summer holidays, but suggested the current immunization schedule may not allow for the shots to be administered in June, when the Pfizer jab is expected to be given authorization.
“During the summer holidays at the latest, we will be able to vaccinate over 12-year-olds once the authorization is there,”he said, adding that June shouldn’t be overloaded with expectations.
The nation’s 16 states have staggered summer holidays, with some schools breaking up on June 21 and others finishing their holidays as late as September 13.
BioNTech CEO Ugur Sahin, whose vaccine is produced with US firm Pfizer, told Der Spiegel that they are likely to apply for authorization to administer their jab to 12- to 15-year-olds next Wednesday. The European Medicines Agency’s analysis of the trial data “takes four to six weeks on average,” he added.
BioNTech/Pfizer applied for similar authorization in the US earlier in April.
In late March, BioNTech and Pfizer said that phase three trials for their jab in 12- to 15-year-old have proven 100 percent effective in preventing Covid-19.

Why in God’s name subject our children to the risk of death from vaccination?
AS TCW reported yesterday, the regulator MHRA has approved the Pfizer Covid vaccine for children as young as 12. Originally, it was argued that vaccines were needed to protect children against severe Covid. However, even the most ardent pro-vaxxers now recognise that the illness poses only a tiny risk to children, so they’ve adopted a new strategy: they claim that we must vaccinate children to achieve herd immunity against SARS-CoV-2. This claim reveals a shocking ignorance about the virus.
Here’s the simple fact: we will never achieve full herd immunity against SARS-CoV-2.
The most important thing to remember is that none of the present vaccines confers sterilising immunity; in other words they do not prevent infection or the ability to transmit the virus; they only protect against severe cases. Both the regulatory agencies and the vaccine manufacturers admit this. This is because the vaccines do not produce mucosal antibody responses in the airways. Thus, we have a significant number of ‘breakthrough cases’ in double-vaxxed subjects, including seven members of the New York Yankees who recently tested positive after being fully vaccinated.
Thus, even if we vaccinated everyone on earth with the present Covid vaccines, we would not achieve full herd immunity. The virus would still spread between people, and those with weak immune systems, including the elderly and those with comorbidities, would continue to develop covid from time to time.
But let’s imagine that scientists developed a vaccine that did confer something like full sterilising immunity. We might be able to hunt down human clusters of Covid, but what are we going to do with the animal reservoirs of SARS-CoV-2? According to the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the following animals can be infected with the virus: cats, dogs, voles, ferrets, fruit bats, hamsters, mink, pigs, rabbits, raccoon dogs, tree shrews and white-tailed deer. So, are we going chase down all the domestic and wild animals around us and vaccinate them?
Smallpox is the only virus that humanity has fully eliminated from the world. We were able to do this because it infects only humans (i.e. it has no animal reservoir), and we have a smallpox vaccine that confers full sterilising immunity. We have not been able to eliminate any of the other viruses for which we receive regular vaccinations. Even polio still exists, despite a 32-year vaccination campaign, despite a nearly perfect vaccine, and despite the fact that polio does not infect other animals.
So let’s face it: complete herd immunity is a pipe dream. So is ‘zero Covid’ or full elimination of the virus. Any attempts to achieve these things will cause massive economic harm and involve severe violations of human rights and individual freedoms. And they will fail.

Pfizer said Tuesday it is advancing late-stage clinical trials of its COVID vaccine, in lower doses, on children ages 5 to 11 years old and expects to apply for approval early this fall.
Pfizer’s vaccine is already being administered to children 12 and up, who receive the same 30 microgram dose as adults.
Moderna said it also expects its COVID vaccine will be available for kids as young as 5 by early fall. CEO Stéphane Bancel said Monday he thinks the data will become available sometime in September, CBS Boston reported.
Earlier this month, Moderna applied to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for full approval of its COVID vaccine for adults 18 and older, which is being administered now under Emergency Use Authorization. The company said it plans to seek expanded emergency use approval in the U.S. for the vaccine for ages 12 and up early this month.
Pfizer plans trials on children as young as 6 months
The Pfizer study on children 5 to 11 will enroll up to 4,500 children at more than 90 clinical sites in the U.S., Finland, Poland and Spain, the company said.
Based on safety, efficacy and tolerability data from the 144 children included in Pfizer’s phase 1 trial, the company will use 10 micrograms of each vaccine dose for kids between the ages of 5 and 11 in phase 2/3 trials, and 3 micrograms of each dose for those 5 and younger.
