It appears to me that Mr Rees-Mogg is the only politician capable of delivering any sort of meaningful exit from the EU. I have been giving serious consideration to joining the Conservative Party with the intention of being able to vote for him in any upcoming leadership content (which is looking increasingly likely). He has a "Moggmentum" campaign which is urging people to do this. However, on the other hand I have deep reservations about putting any faith in politicians or engaging with the political system in general. I'd be interested in hearing others' thoughts on this.

Regardless of views on Brexit, it is clear that the key issues were not presented to the populous e.g. 'single market' and 'customs union' were rarely if ever discussed, before the referendum. The vote was hugely influenced by things such as the £350m extra for the NHS. Anyone who did a modicum of research at the time, would have know this was a complete fabrication, as it proved... but most people don't research, they thrive on soundbites. It seems now that the majority of people try to justify their decision, by ignoring any facts, the downside is that it is polarising people, rather than encouraging healthy debate. As far as Rees-Mogg; clearly an educated and intelligent person, (with some unintelligent ideals). You don't have to dig too far to find some very 19th century positions, on things such as abortion, which for me, make him un-electable.

I think it is fair to assume that the majority of voters will have believed that exiting the EU meant exiting the single market. I suspect many didn't know or understand what the customs union is. Nonetheless, there were just as many exaggerations and lies on both sides of the debate so I don't think it is right to focus only on those by the 'leave' camp.

In respect of Rees-Mogg's political views in general, as he is a Tory there are many that know I do not agree with. He does disagree with abortion on religious grounds but does also say that he would not seek to make it illegal which is a fair enough position as far as I'm concerned. I think the fact that he comes across as intelligent and principled makes him very electable for the same reason that people are drawn to Corbyn. As a back bencher he is also untainted by the failings of the current administration.

In all likelihood very little will change if he does become PM. I doubt his party would even let him take us properly out of the EU but the fact that he might try to do so makes him, for me, eminently more desirable as leader than any of his colleagues.
