Reports from the Front Line in Ukraine

Leaked documents: British spies constructing secret terror army in Ukraine

Documents obtained by The Grayzone reveal plans by a cell of British military-intelligence figures to organize and train a covert Ukrainian “partisan” army with explicit instructions to attack Russian targets in Crimea.
On October 28th, a Ukrainian drone attack damaged the Russian Black Sea fleet’s flagship vessel in the Crimean port of Sevastopol. Moscow immediately blamed Britain for assisting and orchestrating the strike, as well as blowing up the Nord Stream pipelines – the worst acts of industrial sabotage in recent memory.
The British Ministry of Defense issued a blustery denial in response, branding the accusations “false claims of an epic scale.” Whoever was behind those specific attacks, suspicions of a British hidden hand in the destruction are not unfounded. The Grayzone has obtained leaked documents detailing British military-intelligence operatives inking an agreement with the Security Service of Ukraine’s Odessa branch, to create and train a secret Ukrainian partisan terror army.
Their plans called for the secret army to conduct sabotage and reconnaissance operations targeting Crimea on behalf of the Ukrainian Security Service (SSU) – precisely the kind of attacks witnessed in past weeks.
As The Grazyone previously reported, the same coterie of military-intelligence operatives was responsible for drawing up plans to blow up Crimea’s Kerch Bridge. That goal was fulfilled on October 8th in the form of a suicide truck bomb attack, temporarily disabling the sole connecting point between mainland Russia and Crimea, and triggering a major escalation in Moscow’s attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure.
These blueprints were produced by a military veteran named Hugh Ward, at the request of Chris Donnelly, a British military-intelligence operative best known for hatching the covert, Foreign Office-funded Integrity Initiative information warfare program.

Donbass frontline villager: “Ukraine doesn’t consider us human”, wants to “annihilate us”

Zaitsevo, a front-line village north of Gorlovka, in the north of the Donetsk People’s Republic, has been extremely hard-hit by Ukrainian shelling, since 2014. What was once a village of 3,500, with a school & kindergarten, is now a shell of a village, with at most 1,000 residents, most of whom don’t stay in the village, but come for brief visits & retreat to relative safety in Gorlovka,a city likewise heavily shelled, including with HIMARs on November 12.

Not far away, in Golmovsky, I spoke with some of the residents who remain. One told me he’d fled his own town, Dolomoti, NE of Golmovsky, which he said was destroyed by Ukrainian shelling, and has lost three homes, burned down after Ukrainian shelling. He said they were evicted from Dolomoti in 2019, and in 2020, Ukraine completely destroyed the village, “every single house”.

He collected money to rent an apartment in Golmovsky, “but three days ago I it was hit. I just bought it, and it was already hit. They don’t consider us humans. They say it on tv, that we are not human. In 2019, 2020, they told us they don’t consider us human and if they enter this place there would be nobody left, they’d annihilate us.”
These are but glimpses of the horror Donbass civilians have been living since Ukraine began shelling them in 2014. Complicit media, with blood on their hands, claim this isn’t happening. The people being bombed beg to differ.

“Eva Bartlett: Western silence as Ukraine targets civilians in Donbass”

“Addressing the EIR Symposium, “Peace On Earth, Or Humanity’s Doom? The Case For Negotiations,” Canadian journalist Eva Bartlett, who was granted the 2017 International Journalism Award by the Journalists’ Club of Mexico and has spent years doing on-the-ground reporting of wars in the Middle East, gave an eyewitness account of the ongoing genocide against the people of Donbass, where she has been reporting for the last year. Since 2014, she reported, 12,500 civilians have been killed by sniping and shelling with NATO weapons in both the Lugansk People’s Republic and Donetsk People’s Republic, with over 4,500 killed since mid-February of this year. Given that civilian areas are targeted, this shelling constitutes terrorism and war crimes…

Kiev Regime got what it was so eager for

The President of Ukraine made another loud statement, which in fact admitted that the Kiev regime had unleashed a war.

In an interview with Spiegel, Zelensky said that he had made his own decision to abandon the implementation of the Minsk agreements, of which he informed Macron and Merkel. He allegedly did not notice a desire to preserve the independence of Ukraine in the agreements signed by the Kiev regime and approved by the UN Security Council. In their turn, according to Zelensky, his Western partners primarily wanted to satisfy Russia’s appetite a little at the expense of Ukraine.
Kiev acknowledged that it has always perceived the Minsk agreements as imposed and not leading to any settlement.
Zelensky’s statements are nothing more than an attempt to whitewash his European partners, whose reputation has suffered after recognizing the long-term militant policy aimed against Russia.
In December 2022, Merkel said that the Minsk agreements were needed to strengthen Ukraine. Former French President Francois Hollande agreed that the agreements “temporarily stopped the offensive of the Russians.” Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine later confirmed that there was a program to prepare population for war.
Both Kiev and its Western patrons have admitted that they are guilty of fomenting war in Ukraine, that they deliberately killed the citizens of Donbass for years, ignoring international agreements, and did everything to involve Russia in the war. Such policies have always deserves international tribunals.
The Kiev regime got what it was so eager for. Now Russian forces continue to push through the Ukrainian defense on the fronts and strike at strategic facilities throughout the country.
In the Zaporozhye direction, Russian troops launched another attack on Novoandreevka.
In the Ugledar region, Russian units are advancing to Prechistovka and have bypassed Ugledar from the west.
On the Donetsk front, Russian troops are destroying Ukrainian strongholds in the western districts of Maryinka. They continue their assault in Peromayske. Russian offensive operations continue in Avdiivka, Veseloe and Novokalinove.
In the area of Bakhmut, Russian troops are approaching Chasov Yar, their offensive on Ivanovskoye continues. The defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine cannot withstand the pressure on the eastern districts of the city. To the north, Wagner fighters are storming Paraskovevka and Krasnaya Gora. PMCs are also advancing towards Fedorovka.
In the Starobilsk direction, Russian troops stormed the village of Sinkovka. Near Krasny Liman, fighting is ongoing in the area of Zhuravka.
Last night, Russian forces launched dozens of strikes with missiles and Geranium-2 UAVs, destroying more Ukrainian strategic facilities. Explosions thundered in Slavyansk, Kramatorsk, Konstantinovka, Dnepropetrovsk, Zaporozhye and Mykolaiv regions.

A Ukrainian soldier asks his commanders to withdraw the Ukrainian troops from Bakhmut.

You bastards, the Ukrainian command, take the guys out of Bakhmut! It will be a repeat of Azovstal! Take the guys out; how many video appeals have we already recorded? Why don't you hear bitches? Do you like it when our guys die, you bastards? Take your son or wife and take them to Bakhmut, and let them stand there!

And you fucking deputies sit in a chair and shout glory to Ukraine? You are not patriots; you are murderers; you are beasts; you are devils! We don't ask for much: withdraw from Bakhmut; issue an order to withdraw troops from Bakhmut! Whatever the cost, it will be the right decision.

I'll tell you another thing for sure: when the war is over, one hundred percent, there will be a sweep of our deputies for whom our heroes, our soldiers, died! Glory to Ukraine

Ukrainian policy in the Donbass: Is it fair to call it genocide?

This essay will consider the above question first by considering the concept of genocide and then the actions of the Ukrainian Government in relation to the Donbass and Crimea: “anti-terror” operations, shelling of civilians, use of torture, propaganda, linguistic, educational and religious rights, water supplies, etc. It will conclude that it is indeed fair, or proper, to call Ukrainian policy, from 2014 to today, ‘genocide’ in terms of the United Nations Genocide Convention’s definition of the concept.

Genocide

Homicide, suicide, regicide, patricide—all these words include the root -cide, which comes via French from the Latin cidium—the act of killing, and caedere, to kill, slay. In each of the above four cases, an individual is killed; there is the complete death of an individual. One might well think that genocide therefore ought to mean the complete killing or death of an ethnic group (the stem geno- comes from the Greek genos—race, kind, nation, a people) through massacre, mass murder, so that a particular ethnic group of people is exterminated and no longer exists.

However, the man who invented the term genocide in 1944—the Polish-born, Jewish-American jurist, Raphael Lemkin—added his own qualification to the use of the root -cide:

Quote:Generally speaking, genocide does not necessarily mean the immediate destruction of a nation, except when accomplished by mass killings of all members of a nation. It is intended rather to signify a coordinated plan of different actions aimed at the destruction of essential foundations of the life of national groups, with the aim of annihilating the groups themselves. [Emphasis added]

So, for Lemkin, the point about ‘genocide’ is not so much that it denotes the actual total destruction or ‘death’ of an ethnic group but that it denotes a plan that is aimed at the destruction of the target group; this can therefore include various acts of non-homicidal oppression.

Before Lemkin, the English language already had terms to describe the mass murder of large numbers of an ethnic group, terms that did not go so far as total annihilation, namely: mass murder, race murder, mass killing, mass slaughter. Yet Winston Churchill called the mass killings of Soviet troops and civilians by the Nazis in Operation Barbarossa during World War II “a crime without a name”. There was no single term in English to denote the total eradication, or the planned and attempted total eradication, of a single people—not a juridical term, at any rate; a term that would correspond at ethnic scale to the murder or attempted murder of an individual person.

But Lemkin was a jurist. He had been appalled that after the First World War, no specific international law existed to prosecute the Ottoman Turkish leaders responsible for the planning, organisation and killing of between 600,000 and 1½ million Armenians during that war. However, the Armenian massacres and deportations, terrible though they were, did not result in the total disappearance, the death of the Armenians as a people: they did not disappear but managed to establish their own republic after the war (1918–1920), until the USSR subsumed them in 1922; and then, almost 70 years later, in 1991, the Armenian people re-established the independent Republic of Armenia, which still exists.

While the fate of the Armenians had moved Raphael Lemkin to think about a new crime of ethnic mass murder, in inventing the term ‘genocide’ and in initiating the UN Genocide Convention in 1948, he clearly had in mind the persecution by the Nazis of his own people, the Jews. Like the Armenians in World War I, the Jews were not all eradicated by the crimes perpetrated against them by the Nazis before and during World War II; on the contrary, their power and influence steadily grew in the West after 1945, not least as a result of what they had suffered at the hands of the Nazis.

Like the Armenians, the Jews too came to establish their own state, Israel, in 1948; the same year as the adoption by the UN of the Genocide Convention. Lemkin was therefore largely successful in getting the UN to adopt the crime of ‘genocide’, but it did so with a five-part definition, which was more specific than the definition Lemkin had proposed to the UN in 1945. The Convention’s Article II omitted the word ‘conspiracy’ that featured three times in Lemkin’s definition, and it defined genocide as:

Quote:... any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group, as such:
(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
© Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.”
[Emphasis added]

Article III declares that:

Quote:The following acts shall be punishable:
(a) Genocide;
(b) Conspiracy to commit genocide;
© Direct and public incitement to commit genocide;
(d) Attempt to commit genocide;
(e) Complicity in genocide.

The important point to note here is those five words “in whole or in part” in Article II. With them, the scope of the concept ‘genocide’ was greatly widened from simply killing “in whole”—killing an entire ethnic group (i.e. total annihilation, eradication)—to destroying only a part of the whole, and furthermore, it was widened to include acts that did not in themselves constitute killing but were acts of oppression that were deemed to aim at the eradication of a people.

Indeed, Gregory H. Stanton, President of the NGO Genocide Watch, has written: “Genocidal acts need not kill or cause the death of members of a group”. In the five-part UN definition of genocide above, criteria (a) and (b) did not specify how many people were to be regarded as a ‘part’ of a people, tribe, nation or religious group, and this has been a contentious issue ever since. How many were the qualifying “members of the group”: 2, 20, 200, 200,000, or 2 million?

Furthermore, criteria (b), (d) and (e) did not relate directly to killing (-cide) as, for example, do such words as homicidesuicideregicidepatricideparricide and infanticide. The actual meaning of one of the two constituent parts of the whole concept of ‘genocide’ was therefore changed. This meant that all those conditions could be included in ‘genocide’ and that prosecutions could be brought for all the crimes (including those which did not involve killing and murder) of the Nazis against the Jews.
‘Bodily or mental harm to members of the group’, for example, could be used to prosecute those who had confiscated Jewish homes and property, because having one’s home taken from one might obviously result in mental or even physical harm. But this was not killing. Neither was criterion (e) above. “Complicity in genocide” could mean simply observing, watching, and not preventing acts of genocide, as well as taking part oneself in killing, for example, by acting under orders.

Ex-Pentagon Analyst Says Ukraine Gov’t Risking Nuclear Meltdown With Dam ‘Terror Attack’

A former Pentagon analyst and whistleblower sounded the alarm over Ukraine’s “terror attack” on the Novaya Kakhovka dam Tuesday, warning it could risk a nuclear meltdown due to the dam’s role in cooling the nearby Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant.
Ukraine and Russia accused each other of destroying the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant’s (HPP) dam, located in the Russian-occupied Kherson region, prompting mass evacuations of numerous towns downstream.
Retired U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Karen Kwiatkowski believes Ukraine is responsible for the dam’s destruction given its well-documented history of false flag and terror attacks.
“It was shocking to see the video of the damaged dam, and more shocking to realize not just the potential for downstream damage to people, but the damage that may have been done to water supplies needed to cool the Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant,” Kwiatkowski told Sputnik on Tuesday.
“Like many Americans, I may have underestimated the Ukrainian leadership’s desire to physically harm and destroy the Russian-controlled and populated regions in the east.”
“This attack, like other recent actions of Ukraine, have all the characteristics of a terror attack, impacting civilians and civilian life, and not geared towards recovering lost land or assets, but destroying them,” she added.
Kwiatkowski noted Ukraine’s recent continuous shelling of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Plant in recent weeks despite the clear nuclear disaster risks.
“Kiev has since has become even more radical, aiming to directly destroy agricultural production, urban populations and industry, transportation, and energy supply,” the retired lieutenant colonel said. “The destruction of part of the dam in Kakhovka combines Ukrainian intent in all four of these aims with a single set of strikes.”
The Ukrainian government engaged in a series of asymmetrical warfare tactics and terror attacks against civilian populations, especially in recent weeks ahead of its much-touted “counteroffensive.”
Earlier last year, Ukraine waged bombing attacks on the Crimean Bridge and Russia’s Saki Air Base on the western coast of Crimea, an August 2022 car bomb that killed Russian philosopher Alexander Dugin’s daughter Daria Dugina, and an April 2023 café bombing of a pro-Russian blogger in St. Petersburg.
Most famously, Ukraine was likely involved in the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines last year.
Ukraine stepped up its attacks in recent weeks and days, shelling Russia’s Belgorod region and launching drone attacks on Russian cities – including on the Kremlin itself.
Despite these facts, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby claimed Tuesday the White House “has reason to believe” Russia was responsible for the attack on the dam.

But a reporter called out Kirby’s statement, dubious about the strategic advantage Russia would have bombing a dam it occupied to destroy its own ethnic villages, prompting him to immediately backtrack and claim the Biden administration made no conclusions.
