Government Tells Banks to Uphold Free Speech as Blacklisting Scandal Deepens

Banks are to be told by the Treasury that they must protect free speech amid an escalating scandal involving the blacklisting of customers who hold views that are deemed verboten among corporate elites. The Telegraph has the story.
Quote:
Jeremy Hunt, the Chancellor, is understood to be “deeply concerned” that overzealous lenders are closing down accounts because they disagree with customers’ opinions and has asked City minister Andrew Griffith to investigate the issue.
Whitehall sources said that results of a consultation on the subject will be published within weeks, after it was launched earlier this year in the wake of PayPal blocking the accounts of free speech groups.
The controversy flared up again last week after the leading Brexiteer Nigel Farage revealed his account had been closed by his bank. A vicar was also dropped as a customer after criticising his lender’s stance on LBGTQ+.
The Treasury is poised to recommend a more rigid notice period if payment providers, including high street lenders, want to close a customer’s account as well as requiring banks to provide more information about why they have decided to shut accounts. Regulators will be able to take action against banks that break the rules.
Officials believe that the recommendations can curb excessive behaviour by banks.
A senior Treasury source said: “It is absolutely a concern. No one should have their bank account denied on the grounds of freedom of expression. We expect to take action on this issue within weeks.”
Ministers are increasingly worried that there is a trend of closures affecting customers who hold controversial [sic] political views.
Mr. Farage last week said his bank accounts were closed “without explanation” and other high street lenders refused to allow him to transfer his funds to them.
Anglican vicar Reverend Richard Fothergill claimed that his Yorkshire Building Society account was shuttered days after writing to the bank to complain about its public messaging during Pride month.
A spokesman for Yorkshire Building Society said the company never closes accounts based on different opinions or beliefs, adding an account was only ever closed if a customer is “rude, abusive, violent or discriminates in any way”.
Government sources stressed that even people with extreme views should be entitled to hold a bank account if they have not broken the law.
The Treasury source added: “Banks and payment providers occupy a privileged place in society and it would be a concern if financial services were being denied to those exercising the right to lawful free speech.” …

Christian man has his job offer rescinded after the company learns of his victory in a free speech case

A devout Christian social worker has had a £25,000-a-year job offer withdrawn after his employer discovered he had once won a landmark legal case over his right to freedom of speech.
Felix Ngole was thrown off a social worker training course at Sheffield University following his Facebook post which quoted passages from the Bible about same-sex marriage.
But in a major victory for free speech, he was allowed to return to his training when the Court of Appeal ruled in 2019 that Mr Ngole would ‘never discriminate against anyone’ because of his personal views. His case was featured in The Mail on Sunday as part of our Fighting For Free Speech campaign.
But now the father-of-three faces further hardship as a result of his religious beliefs. He successfully applied for a job at Leeds-based Touchstone Support as a mental health support worker but the offer was rescinded weeks later when the organisation discovered his involvement in the previous case. The company, which is backed by LGBT lobby group Stonewall, claimed his ‘strong views against homosexuality’ did not align with its ‘ethos and values’.

Lunatic control-freaks Sadiq Khan and TfL support ban on London Underground wedding cake ad that cost £20K because the cake is ‘unhealthy’. You ARROGANT buffoons

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has said the theatre whose advert featuring a wedding cake was banned from the Tube should have checked that it met Transport for London’s (TfL) rules around displaying unhealthy foods before spending £20,000 on designing and printing it.
The issue was raised by London Assembly member Emma Best at Mayor’s Question Time this morning (Thursday, July 20) after bosses ruled that the marketing poster for Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding, a dinner show at Wonderville, Haymarket, used an image of an “unhealthy” three-tier sponge cake.
The poster has since been revised, with the image deleted, because TfL says it was seen to promote “foods high in fat, salt and sugar”. The Mirror reports that the new design has cost the production team a further £5,000.
Now, the Mayor has stood by TfL’s decision, and suggested that the theatre and marketing professionals it hired should have ensured the advert met with the authority’s rules before spending the cash.
He said: “At a previous Mayor’s Question Time, Chair, TfL was criticised for failing to enforce its policies on foods high in fat, sugar and salt. Wrongly, by the way, because it was council bus stops, not TfL bus stops.
“And now, TfL’s being criticised for enforcing its policy. What brands are supposed to do, and what most brands do do, is confirm their advertising complies before they print their posters. It’s stipulated by TfL’s media partners in booking confirmation.
“If this particular theatre decided to print the adverts before they’d got confirmation, that’s clearly an issue for them as the client. TfL’s quite clear in relation to its policies.
“And everyone else for the last few years appears to be following that. I’m obviously sorry for any finances lost by this theatre company. I suggest they speak to the company they used to make sure next time they get compliance confirmed before printing posters.”

Labour Cult-owned tyranny which promoted diesel vehicles now slaps diesel drivers with extra £50 charge to park outside their homes

The changes, which were introduced last week, will see motorists pay for parking based on the emissions output of their vehicle.
Diesel drivers will be hardest hit by the new rules, with all diesel vehicles with a resident or business parking permit incurring a £50 surcharge.
As part of the changes, pay and display parking rates will vary by location, with charges of £2, £5 or £7 per hour, with drivers using a mobile app to pay receiving discounts of up to 65 percent.
The parking rates will be similar to the system of car tax, with vehicles releasing more pollution, facing higher prices based on their emissions band.
Resident and business parking permits will also be affected with 13 emission bands enforced for drivers in Greenwich borough.
Those with the least polluting vehicles, including electric cars and other zero emission vehicles, can receive discounts of up to 80 percent.
In addition to the £50 surcharge for diesel drivers, any resident or business wanting to register an extra vehicle at the address with face a £100 surcharge.
Motorists with the most polluting vehicles – those which release more than 255g of CO2 per kilometre – will have to pay £300 for a permit.
In comparison, motorists in Greenwich with zero emission vehicles will pay just £20, as the council aims to encourage drivers to use greener types of transport.
Councillor Averil Lekau, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Environment and Transport at Greenwich Council, said they were committed to cutting pollution in the area.
She continued, saying: “These changes to parking charges and permit costs will encourage residents and businesses to embrace more environmentally friendly ways to travel, including using public transport, low emission vehicles, walking, cycling and scooting.”
In 2019, almost a third of total CO2 emissions in Greenwich came from transport, with 95 percent of that total coming from cars, vans and trucks.
In a bid to help drivers with the price increases, especially during a cost of living crisis, the council is investing £3.1million to improve the transport network.
Councillor Lekau added: “As well as a variety of improvements to make our roads attractive for pedestrians and cyclists, we’re also working with external partners to offer more EV charging points and create new car clubs in the borough.”
Greenwich Council is aiming to become carbon neutral by 2030, with Councillor Lekau praising the changes for providing a massive boost to their efforts.
Other councils around London including Croydon, Lewisham, and Newham have also introduced a similar “emissions-based” parking structure.

The global climate cult is getting ready to kick its war on food into overdrive with 13 nations – many of them major cattle and food-producing states led by the United States, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Spain – signing onto a commitment to place farmers under new restrictions intended to reduce emissions of methane gas.

The Global Methane Hub announced in a May 17 press release that agriculture and environmental ministers and ambassadors from 13 countries, including the United States, have signed a commitment that pledges to reduce methane emissions in agriculture. The U.S. was represented by Biden’s climate czar, John Kerry.
What does this mean and why should you care? We’ll break it down.
According to the press release issued by these nations and posted at Global Methane Hub:
