Like the old saying goes, If one fails to prepare one prepares to fail, however upon such a mushroom clouded horizon there is little anyone can do to prepare against such a horrific act of indirect violence.
Then there is the 12 day rule, a scenario which would remove all those who prepared but never had any true survival skills, and depending on the time of year/season/aged of the person etc, this number is fairly accurate and how long the majority would last in a full scale downfall of society with limited food, supplies and skills, the latter being one of the most important of the triad.
As a young man myself together with a small group of freinds did a series of our own detailed experiments out in the field and in an urban setting, as to how long the average person would last on different levels of calories, first we tried 500 Cal per day and this proved to be a much shorter time, especially as we were out in the open, even at most favourable times of year before we ran out of energy to find extra food from the land.
Then we increased the calorie level until we could begin to function properly and we soon realized how quickly even the able person would last before the body began/started eating itself and muscle/energy loss began to take hold.
This is where we got the term "The Twelve Day Rule",
The best case scenario was 1500 calories per day MIN, being under cover and being able to keep warm, an another term from an old school freind, saying when ever encountering this kind of situation, he said always remember, "Heat is Half Meat". Meaning if you could not keep warm and dry then your body would soon begin eating at the muscle structure after the fat content was quickly exhausted in as little as two days, depending on the body size and structure.
Who can remember the mining dissaster in Brazil of late? where the miners were rescued using a new technique of a vertical boring machine, here was the perfect survival experiment, these miners were only able to survive because they were dry and warm and had just enough food intake, about a mouthful per day of tuna fish/protien at the latter end of their sub terraneian imprisonment, and just enough water to stop their bodies self cannibalizing itself, which is a similar case scenario to what we tried fourty five years ago, but almost as traumatic because we we above ground and in the cold.
I hope those reading this will copy and paste it to memory because 12 days is the time limit and where 80 percent of the masses would fall by the wayside, a couple of day further on from this point and even anything dead would also be inedible, totally ruling out canabalism to the strongest of stomachs, this is something I know about well after finding any of our sheep that died in the field, after only 24 hours and having to vent it to let out the poisoned gasses, so we never had to dig a much larger hole to bury it.
