The camera equipment may retain a certain amount of moisture, even if kept in a vacuum pre flight, perhaps enough to cause errors. It is as you suggest posible that they could use some extra solar power to add heat to equipment. Again though from my experience in freezing temperatures cameras and batteries don't perform well or last very long, I have known batteries fail after 15 minutes when they would normally last half a day interest thoughts though
