FB POST - Zed Phoenix

We’ve been hearing a lot lately about false news and the rise of citizen journalism.

It seems to me that there is a direct link between the mainstream media creating the term "false news" along, with the rise of the “Citizen Journalist” which the media calls User Generated Content or (UGC).

This article is an example of UGC, in fact anything you publish on Facebook, Youtube or on the internet is all user generated content and companies like Google, Apple, Facebook, Microsoft and Amazon etc have worked out how to make trillions of dollars out of our content online.

So now the model has been created mainstream media are getting involved as more and more of their content is generated by users, the general public. Everyone has a camera phone, so everyone is a potential citizen journalist, just waiting for the opportunity to present its self.

News is just information; it’s neither true nor false unless you are directed to believe in one way or the other by a third party, usually a corporation or state news provider.

The mainstream media has used the term “false news” so much, that the world is now in a state of shock and more and more people are saying things like “I don’t believe anything anymore”.

So how have we reached this situation?

"False News" seems to suggest that the news which is produced by certain people, in this case the corporate news media is automatically deemed as true and if it’s produced by other people, the general public and then it’s automatically false.

There are of course exceptions; when the main stream corporate media wants to hear from a member of the public, usually somebody in a crisis situation, then by simply interviewing them the journalist/reporter is verifying that the information is true. The same with cell phone camera footage supplied of an event.

User generated footage has been seen by people online who say it’s false but as soon as the same footage appears on a mainstream media channels, then suddenly its suddenly believed to be true which is all about perception.

So what makes up the idea of "False News" seems to me to be a matter of a lack of verification. Journalists and reporters belong to press associations that accredit them as being a member of the paid press. In other words you are accredited because somebody pays you money to be a journalist. I myself held a press card for many years.

Corporate media hires accredited journalists and reporters because they’re buying their verification standards or that is the theory.

So therefore, if my news organization employs accredited journalists then the news that they produce must be true.

However, as we’ve seen over many years the main stream corporate media and therefore their journalists/ reporters lie, why?

Well, again this comes down to the source of the information that is provided. If the source of information is a lie, then the journalist writes a story or does a report based on an initial lie. So the lie is perpetuated down the editorial line, sold to other news organisations and finally reaches the public, who suddenly believe that it’s the truth when it appears on say the BBC. If nobody questions the initial source then true lies can and do become facts in the public mind.

So the source of information is important. So what’s information?

Information is anything but it only becomes news when it’s given a context and put into a coherent story. Any intelligence officer knows that information by itself is useless, unless it can be put into a context or believable story.

The intelligence officer who wants to attack an enemy will create a story to justify a war or the government uses the same information to tell you a story, so they can raise taxes etc.

So in order to know what is true news and false news the media industry needs to admit that it’s guilty of producing false news and downright lying on many occasions, either knowingly or being used as useful idiot's.

Usually members of the public or citizen journalists don’t go out of their way to produce false or fake news. Usually somebody will be looking something up online and misinterpret a piece of information which is then repeated.

To me the majority of what’s called “False or Fake” news isn’t produced with malicious intent. There are citizen journalists with agenda’s, just like governments have an agendas, corporations have their own separate agendas, who will from time to time join forces to push an idea they agree with, especially if it comes out of a globalist institution it seems.

We know that bad news travels faster than good news and lasts for a lot longer in society’s collective mind. In reality, if you don’t watch television or read a newspaper or look at any news online then after a brief period of time, you relax and the world suddenly becomes a calm and peaceful place.

So how are we to solve the problem of false news when all information is distorted either on purpose or by accident. Simply filming a clip on your phone is distorting an event. You've decided when to push the record button and what to look at.

Clearly truth doesn't exist full stop and if it does it's a jigsaw puzzle where you will never have all the pieces. However "a truth" does. I am here at my computer writing this, this is true. I am the source of information and therefore I am accountable for its verification.

If it turns out in a few months that actually I didn’t write it, and then I’m in trouble. I could be accused of plagiarism, passing someone else’s work off as my own and we already have laws to deal with such things.

So how do we define truth in a world of mass information? How do we know that what we read, watch and listen to is truthful?

Truthfulness, comes from verification of the source, so if someone says I saw that event or I wrote that document then that information starts to be colored by a person’s perception to be more truthful than false.

If under questioning or interview that person can produce footage of the event, the document or has a detailed account for example, the mind gives up on the idea of the information being false and accepts the information as true, a tangible verifiable artifact.

So verification of the source material  is paramount to a having a free press.

Why then should journalists believe so called experts who produce government figures and then simply report on them as though they’re facts, without verifying the source of the information? Well they shouldn't that's not journalism.

That’s what the role of the investigative journalist was for.  If the government said forty people died in a particular hospital of some terrible disease, the journalist would go to that hospital, undercover  to find out if the story was verifiable. If not then the journalist would write a report on why the story isn’t verifiable. Sometimes, the investigative journalist would attempt to discover the truth behind the story and often would uncover government corruption and abuse of power which would be verified by say witness statements and video footage.

None of that happens now and for the mainstream corporate media and the government it means that the idea of the news being a factual artifact has gone and all mainstream media is now simply a propaganda machine because there is no verifying of information going on.

The news that mainstream media create is no longer worthy of inclusion in the human historical record or the public discord. Like the banks, the media is broken and everyone can see it and journalists have allowed it to happen because they’ve followed the agendas of the people that pay them.

They have forgotten that you don’t need permission to verify information. It is your duty as a reporter and journalist to make sure, to the best of your ability that the information presented to the public is a truthful account or you don't put your name to it.

So enter the citizen journalist.

The legacy of Julian Assange is perhaps that, he is the most famous "citizen Journalist", he destroyed the mainstream media by setting up a website which enabled people, who felt that it was in the public interest, to release classified documents, if they could be anonymous. The result was that once those documents were made public, we learned the truth about government corruption and about abuse of power.

WikiLeaks, came to international attention in 2010 when it published a series of leaks provided by U.S. Army intelligence analyst Chelsea Manning.

So, in terms of verifying the authenticity of the leaked documents, they came directly from a witness who worked for the U.S Government and admitted leaking the information. So that leaked information became true because the source was verified and then confirmed by U.S Government officials.

Wikkileaks relies on the idea that they wouldn’t knowingly lie to the public. This is part of the societal contract we all have and that’s how you build trust in any relationship.

In all our relationships personal or business, trust takes a long time, sometimes many, many years but can be broken in an instant. This is why the mainstream media are in a death spiral because they spent decades building up trust with the public, only to break that trust on September 11th 2001.

A BBC reporter Jane Standley announced that the Solomon Brothers building WTC 7, had collapsed when it was in fact still standing. The Solomon Brothers building was clearly visible is the background of the BBC reporters shot  and stood for a further twenty six minutes before the building was brought down, in what appears to any reasonable person, as a controlled demolition.

However, if BBC journalist Jane Standley had bothered to verify the information by asking herself a simple question “had the Solomon Brothers building actually collapsed?” this piece of false news simply wouldn’t have been produced and broadcast to the world to millions of people.  The building was said to have been “weakened” by the collapsing WT1 and 2 buildings.

In the old days of journalism the BBC used to interview eyewitnesses, usually from opposing sides of an argument or people who were experts in a particular field who would give their independent opinion.

But in the mid-to late 1990’s the BBC and ITV switched to simply interviewing their own reporters and using experts who were pre-interviewed to answer pre-prepared questions.

So what you see on your television screens is no different to a TV drama being played out, with actors reading scripts, dramatic music being played and shocking headlines, which are simply short movie trailers of upcoming news segments. Everything about modern news production is false so why do we expect the content to be truthful in anyway?

There are many other examples of the mainstream media producing false news, here's just one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=677i43QfYpQ

What I think Julian Assange  did which, in my opinion is more important than allowing whistleblowers to release sensitive information, is that he changed the public’s perception of news gathering completely. No longer were “accredited” journalists the “Gate keepers” to the public discord.

One person with a website and some truthful information can change the world and he did.

The main stream media are reliant more and more on User Generated Content (UGC) so citizen journalists like Assange and many others, should be recognized as genuine news gathers and offered protection and the benefits that “accredited” corporate journalists receive.

So, for me this is the way forward and the best way to honor Assange and people like him, to officially recognize what they have risked their lives to achieve.

The mainstream media are constantly accusing citizen journalists of spreading and making false news. So on one hand they hate us but on the other they’re using us to make money. The citizen journalist risks their life getting footage and putting information out to the public, often with little or no credit.

So should we, the people, create a data base of registered “Citizen Journalists” and issue our own press card? Citizen Journalists could be offered free legal advice, no intrusion guarantee’s by the police whilst actively engaged in creating news content, training and best practice seminars etc.

That way, those people who are content creators can be identified as “press” whilst working, they have a hotline number to call if they need legal representation or are in physical danger but more importantly it recognizes members of the public as bona fide news gathers.

Being accredited means you’re accountable for the information you produce, therefore the quality of user generated content would go up and creators would feel that they are now part of the news gathering conversation. Rather than used and abused by corporate owned journalists when they have footage they want to use.

If the mainstream media wants to use content produced by accredited citizen journalists, then they would have to pay for it at industry rates. Typically you may get offered around a few hundred pounds for a video if you’re lucky.

However, typically the media will charge each other, in the region of one hundred pounds per second for footage. So having paid you a small fee of say three hundred pounds, for example for your 30 second clip they will sell that clip to another media outlet for three thousand pounds.

If your video contains exclusive footage, I’ve seen video’s that have sold for seventy thousand pounds and above whilst the content creator is bought off with a few drinks, a cheap lunch and a few hundred pounds.

You’ve Been Framed a well-known television brand was solely reliant on user generated content. The broadcasters advertised that it would pay two hundred and fifty pounds for a video, if used! ITV sold that show all over the world and made millions; it was considered cheap television to produce, as the viewer did all the work producing hilarious videos.

So isn’t it time to recognize people as Citizen Journalists? Accredit them and pay them accordingly at media industry rates?

There is a new user generated content industry emerging and I think it’s time to recognize who has the balance of power in this new industry before the mainstream media and Wall Street claim to own it.

We the Citizen Journalists can set our own standards, to protect UGC sources, reputation and trust in citizen journalism, which is now the only free-press journalism.

Citizen Journalists have a right to make money from their content, just like full-time journalists, if they wish to.

Bringing in user generated content and recognizing the massive contribution that “citizen journalists” make, can only improve this new media industry.

The user generated industry is potentially worth more money than any other industry on the planet. Google, Facebook, Apple, Amazon and Microsoft all know it, they’re just hoping that you don’t realise the power you hold, once you do its game over for them. A day could come when Facebook has to pay you for your content, your data because they're making billions out of you.

It is ordinary people, the brave citizen journalist, the weekend activist, the protestor with a camera phone, the keyboard warrior, the mothers, fathers, sons and daughters who are generating the news content.

The mainstream media will have to relinquish their “Gate Keeper” attitude or go out of business as the UGC generation has arrived and they're are in control.

SO, should citizen journalists be recognised as legitimate news gathers and have their own press card?

Fake-Raine: citizen journalism at its best -

Fake-Raine: One Man’s Trip Through the Hollywood Movie Set We Know as Ukraine
By Rhoda Wilson on March 12, 2022 • ( 20 Comments )
Earlier this month wanting to document the truth about Ukraine, Lez LuTHOR, a self-described illusion warfare correspondent, took it upon himself to make the trip.  And as any good war correspondent would, he has been posting regular reports, a diary of his trip to Ukraine, on twitter to keep folks at home updated.
This is citizen journalism at its best.
Lez left the UK for Ukraine on 3 March. He explained in a tweet his videos are purposefully 24 or sometimes 48 hours behind because “I’m getting death threats and was walking around a city under martial law.”
At the time of writing, he was still posting updates from Ukraine.  He tweeted: “I was meant to leave today 11/3, but I’m still around, if I can crowd source funding I’ll stay.”

Video: Mariupol: “Nicolay Knows”. Civilians Denounce the Crimes of the Neo-Nazi Azov Regiment -

On 20 March 2022, while we were conducting a humanitarian mission near Sartana, on the north-eastern outskirts of Mariupol, we came across many civilians who had recently fled Mariupol thanks to the advance of Russian and DPR (Donetsk People’s Republic) troops. One of them, Nikolay, agreed to talk on camera about the crimes committed by the neo-Nazi Azov regiment against the inhabitants. A testimony confirmed by other civilians who managed to evacuate the city.

As we deliver the last of our food supplies and baby nappies to the fifth village in our humanitarian mission near Sartana, a man comes out of the house where he is staying and starts talking to us. We discover that he has recently managed to flee Mariupol, after three weeks of horror.
I ask him if he knows by any chance what really happened in the Mariupol maternity hospital and theatre, about which the Western media have recently made their headlines. And there surprise, Nikolay knows what happened there, he saw with his own eyes, how the maternity hospital was transformed into a military position and a firing position by the fighters of the Azov regiment (which he still calls Azov battalion by the way). He confirms that the hospital had been evacuated to another area and was therefore no longer in working order.
He also explains that the dramatic theatre in Mariupol was not destroyed at all by a bombing by the Russian army, but that the fighters of the Azov regiment blew it up!
See Nikolay’s interview with English subtitles:
