Chris Whitty today endorsed plans to vaccinate healthy 12 to 15-year-olds against Covid, with millions of children due to start getting their jabs from next week.
England’s Chief Medical Officer and his counterparts in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland said a secondary school rollout will help prevent further disruptions to education this winter.
Under-16s will initially only be offered a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine, shown to be up to 55 per cent effective at preventing infection from the Delta variant.
A decision on second doses is still to be determined, when more data is available internationally. Officials will weigh up the risk of heart complications after vaccination, which are slightly more common after the second shot.
Doses will be largely administered through the school vaccination programme, and it’s believed parental consent will be sought – but children will be able to overrule their parents in the case of a conflict.
The chief medical officers said that even though Covid poses a small risk to children’s health, the negative impacts of school closures on their life prospects and mental wellbeing tipped the balance in favour of vaccination.
If the recommendation is accepted by ministers, it will mean that around 3million more youngsters will be offered a vaccine from as soon as next week. The jabs will be rolled out as part of the school vaccination programme.
Professor Whitty and the CMOs in the devolved nations were asked to look at the ‘broader’ societal benefits of vaccinating schoolchildren at the start of the month after the Government’s advisers ruled against the move.
The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) said immunising healthy under-16s would only provide ‘marginal’ benefit to their health, and not enough to recommend a mass rollout.
But it advised the Government to seek further advice from its chief medical officers about the wider benefits of vaccination on the pandemic, which was beyond the scope of its review.

More than 30 million people are set to be offered a booster jab as part of the government’s plan to get the country through coronavirus over the winter and prevent a further lockdown.
As part of the plans all those who are clinically extremely vulnerable and anyone aged 16 to 65 in an at-risk group group for Covid will also be eligible for a jab, as will key workers and all people over-50.
Meanwhile, vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi today confirmed that children aged 12-15 years old will be able to get a Covid jab starting next week and that they can overrule parents to get the vaccine.
Mr Zahawi said that if a child and parent disagree about taking the vaccine and the child is deemed “competent” by clinicians, then they are able to get the Covid jab.
It comes as Health Secretary Sajid Javid updates the House of Commons on the government’s winter coronavirus plan.

Tory MP calls for Chris Whitty to resign after ‘Covid’ fake vaccines approved for 12 to 15-year-olds

England’s chief medical officer (CMO) should resign over his decision to roll out Covid vaccinations to children “without good clinical reason”, a backbench Tory MP has claimed.A row broke out on Monday after the government announced 12 to 15-year-olds will be offered one Pfizer jab from next week, following a decision made by the CMOs of each of the UK’s four nations, including England’s Professor Chris Whitty.

Responding to the move in a tweet on Monday night Marcus Fysh, the Conservative MP for Yeovil, claimed Prof Whitty “does not deserve the confidence of the country” as he called for him to step down.
Speaking in the House of Commons earlier, Mr Fysh said he had “grave concerns about this policy and the fact that the chief medical officers have made their decision on the basis of the educational impact rather than the health of the children at clinical level.”
In a previous ruling the JCVI, which looks at vaccinations from a purely clinical perspective, concluded that the virus presents a very low risk for children and therefore an inoculation programme would offer only minor benefits.

A former Dragons’ Den star has sparked fury by saying Chris Whitty ‘will hang’ for recommending Covid jabs for children.
Ex-‘Dragon’ Rachel Elnaugh, 56,  took to Twitter to call the decision to launch a UK-wide vaccination programme for children aged 12-15 as ‘child abuse’.
Responding to a tweet by Good Morning Britain, which asked viewers if they were happy for their children to be vaccinated, the businesswoman wrote: ‘Child abuse. Whitty will hang for this.’

The tweet, posted from the entrepreneur’s verified Twitter account, sparked a huge backlash.
Many criticised the comment aimed at England’s Chief Medical Officer – who earlier this year was assaulted by anti-vaxxers as he walked through a park in London.
It was the fourth time a report had been made to police alleging harassment against Professor Whitty – who has been thrust into the limelight during the Covid pandemic.
Ian Fraser, one of those to criticise Ms Elnaugh’s tweet, wrote: ‘What the former ‘Dragon’ Rachel Elnaugh tweeted here is vile, disgraceful and seemingly inciting violence against a Government official’. He also urged Twitter to review the Tweet.
Another wrote: ‘Nothing to see here. Just Rachel Elnaugh – an investor from a BBC show most people know – Dragon’s Den – insinuating that children receiving the vaccine is child abuse.
‘These rotten views run deep and anyone can have them.’

Children vaccines: High Court asked to pause Covid jab rollout for kids

A judicial review has been brought by lawyers at Jackson Osborne which applied to Her Majesty’s High Court of Justice for an urgent order to challenge the temporary authorisation of the vaccines for 12 to 15-year-olds which begins as part of a mass school rollout on Wednesday (September 22). A decision about whether there is an arguable case and, if so, should the rollout be paused until the case can be heard, is expected on Tuesday (September 21).
The challenge, which will present evidence from experts, doctors and scientists, will argue there is no legal, moral or medical justification for children to receive the covid jab. It will also argue the vaccine is novel and comes with associated risks such as potentially deadly heart inflammation ‑ myocarditis.
Stephen Jackson, the lawyer who is spearheading the case said: “This vaccine has been authorised for emergency use but the emergency is long over and for children there has never been an emergency.
“Healthy children do not benefit from this vaccination as children are not at risk from covid however they are at risk from its serious side effects such as paralysis (guillain barre syndrome) myocarditis and potential long term effects which we cannot yet know about.”

Vaccinating 5 to 11-year-olds would reduce Covid hospitalisations and mortality in the UK by 60 per cent, a scientific paper has found.
The study, which is at the pre-publication stage at the medical journal The Lancet, found strong evidence for extending Covid jabs in younger children.
It said that if Covid vaccines are extended to 5 to 11-year-olds Covid hospitalisations and deaths would decrease significantly. Experts who wrote the report, which was funded by vaccine producer Moderna, found giving jabs to the younger age group would reduce Covid hospitalisations by 60 per cent, Covid deaths by 57 per cent and instances of long Covid by 75 per cent.
They also said vaccinating under 12s is expected to have “a greater population-wide benefit” than was observed in adolescents.


The report said: “Given the increased mixing patterns, difficulties in maintaining physical distance and poor adherence with face coverings, this approach has double the impact of vaccinating those over the age of 12 (73 per cent vs 26 per cent respectively).”


However, co-author Dr David Strain, the clinical lead for Covid services at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation Trust, has said he is not yet convinced by the data, and wouldn’t want his children to receive the jab yet.
